5 Vital Reasons Why Freelancers Should Keep Their Office Tidy
As a freelancer, there are many things you can do to improve your business opportunities. But, one of them is so simple, it is often overlooked. Today. I’m going to strip things back to basics and reveal one of the best things you can do to start making more of your business. It’s all about keeping a tidy office – read on to find out more.
Keep better records
As a freelancer, you will understand the importance of keeping good financial records. All of your allowable expenses need to have a record so that any questions from the IRS can be answered immediately. The trouble is, when you work in an untidy office, that all goes to pot. And, if you ever have to respond to an investigation inquiry, it can lead to a lot more problems than you thought possible. So, have a place for everything, and make sure you keep perfect financial records.
You never know who will come calling
If you work in a messy office, it’s going to be embarrassing if you ever need to see a client. And, don’t think you can avoid them coming to your home. If someone rings you with an urgent job inquiry, they might well need to come straight to your house. You always need to be ready to receive clients – and keeping your office in good shape is the only way to give them a good first impression.
Think about how you work from home – with lots of computers and devices on, and many sockets filled with plugs. All those wires can be a genuine hazard to your safety, and an electrical fire is not out of the equation. Make sure you spend some time keeping all of your wires in a safe manner – especially the back of your desk. Try a low temperature PoE power supply, too. When you are pushing all your equipment to the max, it can often lead to overheating problems, which could result in a fire.
As a freelancer, it’s important to work with no distractions and do the best job you can in the quickest time possible. And, that’s much easier to do when your office is clean and tidy. If there are books, papers and files all over the place, it’s not good for the headspace. And, there is a lot more chance of having an accident. It only takes a little accident with a cup of coffee balanced precariously on a pile of files to ruin your ability to work. So, keep your desk space tidy, and you will be a lot more productive.
It will never happen if you don’t do it now
A lot of freelancers I know put off tidying their desks. There’s never the time; they tell me. The trouble is, there never will be time. So, make a concerted effort to clear it up over a weekend. And, once you are done, make sure you keep it looking good as you go along. It’s all about developing better habits. It will save you so much time in the long-term. And, of course, it will help you find what you need in an instant, rather than a stressful half hour or so.
Ok, so hope you will all keep a cleaner desk from now on! And, if you have any other tips, feel free to let me know!
